The number of children in foster care rose by 3 per cent in the year to 31 March 2019. At that date there were almost 55,000 children and young people placed with foster carers. There was also an increase in fostering households – by 2 per cent to 44,450 – in that period. The figures, which had also risen by about a thousand in each of the previous two years, are included in a release by Ofsted.
